                                      Children and Bones!

      What is a Broken Bone?

A broken bone also called a fracture, is when a break goes through part or all of a bone.

How do Broken Bones happen?

Broken bones mostly happen from kids falls or while playing sports.

What are the types of Fractures?

  • A greenstick fracture: a break on one side of the bone only
  • A buckle or torus: an outward bend on one side of the bone without breaking the other side
  • An avulsion fracture: when a tendon or ligament pulls off of a tiny piece of bone
  • A growth plate fracture: a break in the area of a child or teen's growing bone
  • A stress fracture: a tiny crack in the bone
  • A communited Fracture: a bone breaks into more than two pieces
  • A compression fracture: a collapsing of the bone

What are the signs of a broken bone?

If you have a broken bone you will be in severe pain, you will have swelling and bruising too. If you break a bone you won't be able to put weight on the limb. When you break a bone you may hear a snapping sound, and you may feel something grinding inside of you.

How do bones heal?

After a few days after the fracture at the site, the body will form a blood clot around the fracture. After that a a body tissue called callus will connect the broken parts of the bone together. It is soft at first but then it hardens over time and becomes the bone. In fact the bone is harder then before

How do Broken Bones heal?

If doctors think a bone is broken they will take a x-ray.If the bone is broken then they will place a splint, cast,or brace to help it stay in place while it heals. They may give you crutches, knee scooter, or a wheelchair if you break your leg. This helps the bone not have pressure on it while it heals.

Fun Facts

  • Children's bones are more spongy like so they don't break as easily as adult bones. They also heal faster
  • Women have brittle bones, and in order for them to have stronger bones they need to take a lot of calcium. Calcium can come from dairy products.
  • Some common fractures in a child is a forearm fracture, elbow fracture, and ankle fracture
  • Fractures in children rarely require surgery
  • Children have one type of fracture that doesn't occur in adults. It is called a growth plate fracture.A growth plate is in the ends of bones.
  • Children don't have to have perfectly aligned bones they just has to be around the area because they will remodel when the child grows up
  • Stress fractures happen over time
    • Strains and sprains are differentiated by their symptoms because if you break abone you will feel and see warmth and redness, whereas if you break a bone you won’t be able to move the limb
